MWelcome to the wonderful world of cookie decorating! Cookie decorating classes are becoming more and more popular because they make learning easy and fun. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, having the right tools is super important. I’m here to guide you through what you need. I’ve been decorating cookies for a long time and even competed on the Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge! So, let’s get started with the tools that will help you make amazing cookies.

Essential Cookie Decorating Tools for Cookie Decorating Classes

Cookie Cutters are one of the most important tools for cookie decorating. They come in lots of different shapes and sizes, and they help you make cookies that fit any theme or occasion. Having coordinated cookie cutters makes creating fun cookie sets much easier and more fun and creative. Good cookie cutters are worth the investment. High-quality cutters give you clean edges and are easier to use. They last longer, so you won’t have to replace them often.
Metal Cookie Cutters: Good for cutting dough but easily rust if left in soapy water
3D printed Cookie Cutters: Good for cutting dough, durable and able to be made into any shape that you desire. The most popular size for cookie cutters is 3.5".

Piping bags and tips are used to add icing to your cookies in different designs. They help you control the icing so you can make all sorts of patterns and decorations. There are disposable piping bags, which are easy to clean up, and reusable ones, which are better for the environment. I prefer disposable tipless bags because they are easy to use and clean up is a breaze! No tips to wash. I find that small and medium sized bags work best for cookie decorating.  You need a few basic piping tips like round tips for outlining and writing, star tips for making stars and swirls, and leaf tips for creating leaves. These tips let you do lots of different designs. When you fill a piping bag, only fill it halfway to avoid spilling. I like to put my piping bag into a tall glass when filling.  You can use a bag tie to tie off your bag or even use a bag tying machine which is so handy.

Icing Color makes your cookies look even more amazing. There are different types of food coloring you can use. Gel food coloring is better than liquid because it gives you brighter colors and doesn’t make the icing too runny. Use gel coloring to get bold and vibrant colors. Start with a little bit of coloring and add more until you get the color you want. Mixing slowly helps you avoid making the colors too dark or too light. Keep your food coloring in a cool, dark place to make it last longer. Always close the caps tightly to prevent spills and keep the colors from drying out.

Rolling pins and dough tools help you prepare your cookie dough. They make sure your dough is even and ready for cutting. There are wooden, marble, and adjustable rolling pins. Wooden ones are classic and easy to use. They also come in large sizes which are good for rolling out large pieces of cookie dough. A great place to find these in at your local restaurant supply store.  Marble pins stay cooler, which is good for rolling dough. There are also rolling pins that have adjustable rings on the sides. These are very helpful to ensure that you have your dough rolled to an even thickness. Tools like thickness guides and non-stick mats are really helpful. Thickness guides help you roll the dough evenly, and non-stick mats make rolling and cleanup easier. My absolute favorite is the Dough EZ System. Clean your rolling pins and tools after each use. Wooden pins should be washed by hand and dried completely. Other types can usually be wiped clean.

Last but not least you need a good cookie scribe. This helps you wiggle your icing into place and makes cookie decorating much easier.

Last but not least your need a great Royal Icing Recipe.  You can find mine by clicking on this link.

You also need a great sugar cookie recipe when creating your delicious treats.  Why not try a chocolate sugar cookie! This recipe from Lila Loa is a great one that I have used many times!
